Distracted Driving

On June 1, 2017, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed legislation (S.B. 27) increasing the penalty for text messaging while operating a motor vehicle to a $300 fine and four points for each offense. Drivers may also be imprisoned if their actions result in another person’s injury or death. There is no penalty for employers if their employees violate the distracted driving provisions. However, Colorado employers will be guilty of a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense and fined if they require or knowingly permit employees to drive on highways in an unlawful manner.

The law became effective June 1, 2017.
