Question: How much can an employee with family coverage contribute to his HSA plan? Up to the plan deductible, the out-of-pocket maximum on the plan or another amount?
Answer: The maximum annual HSA contribution is based on the statutory limit for the type of HDHP coverage the employee has elected. For 2012, the maximum annual contribution is $3,100 for self-only HDHP coverage or $6,250 for family HDHP coverage, and for 2013, the maximum annual contribution is $3,250 for self-only HDHP coverage or $6,450 for family HDHP coverage, regardless of the level of the HDHP deductible. Participants age 55 or older can also make additional “catch-up” contributions of $1000 each year until eligible for Medicare.
