Private Sector Employee Drug Testing

On May 9, 2017, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed legislation (S.F. 32) applicable to private sector employee drug testing. The law requires the collection of samples be performed under sanitary conditions and with regard for the privacy of the individual from whom the sample is being obtained. The law establishes that the standards for determining detectable levels of controlled substances used for a confirmed positive test result must be the same standards cleared or approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration.

The law is effective July 1, 2017.
