Healthy Working Families Act
In January 2018, the Maryland General Assembly overrode Governor Larry Hogan’s veto of legislation (H.B. 1) to enact the Healthy Working Families Act. Under the act, employers with 15 or more employees must provide employees with paid, earned sick and safe leave, and employers with 14 or fewer employees must provide unpaid earned sick and safe leave. The law also prohibits employers from being required to pay a tipped employee more than a minimum wage for earned sick and safe leave.
The Maryland Commissioner of Labor and Industry will develop a specified model paid sick and safe leave policy for employer use.
The law is effective February 11, 2018, unless the General Assembly passes legislation delaying implementation.
