Paid Sick Leave for World Trade Center Health Condition
On September 11, 2017, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation (A.B. 7901A/S.B. 6398A) that provides unlimited paid sick leave to current municipality, public authority, or state employees outside of New York City, who filed a notice of participation in the World Trade Center clean-up and recovery efforts, and who have a qualifying World Trade Center health condition.
This unlimited paid sick leave will be paid at 100 percent of the employee’s regular salary, dating back to the date of diagnosis of the condition, and without loss of accrued sick leave.
Similar paid leave benefits are currently available for employees of the New York Police Department, New York Fire Department, New York City Corrections, and New York City Sanitation for injuries and illnesses obtained in the line of duty. Outside of New York City, municipalities provide similar line of duty coverage for their paid police officers and fire fighters.
The law is effective immediately.
