Washington Votes to Increase Minimum Wage and Establish Paid Sick Time

On November 8, 2016, Washington voters approved Initiative Measure 1433, which:

  • Increases the state minimum wage to $13.50 per hour by 2021.
  • Requires employers to provide employees with paid sick leave beginning in 2018.

Scheduled increases to the minimum wage are as follows:

  • Effective January 1, 2017, $11 per hour.
  • Effective January 1, 2018, $11.50 per hour.
  • Effective January 1, 2019, $12 per hour.
  • Effective January 1, 2020, $13.50 per hour.
  • Effective January 1, 2021, annual increases will be based on increases in the cost of living.
