Answer: Best practice is for an employer to establish and consistently apply a policy regarding how the company will respond to employment verification requests. In general, most conservative company policies decline to provide any information unless the employee has provided written permission to release information or they are required by a court order. Generally, this permission is provided in a written document and signed by the employee (or court representative) providing release of specific information, not by telephone.
