Data Breach Notification Act
On April 6, 2017, New Mexico’s Governor Susana Martinez signed the Data Breach Notification Act (H.B. 15) into law, which requires notification to persons affected by a security breach involving personal identifying information. The act also requires secure storage and disposal of data containing personal identifying information and notification of a consumer breach to consumer reports agencies and the Office of the Attorney General; provides civil penalties; and exempts New Mexico and its political subdivisions from compliance with the act.
The act is effective July 16, 2017.

National Guard Employment Protections
On March 29, 2017, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez signed legislation (H.B. 83) amending state law concerning employment protections for National Guard members. The bill expands the protections to employees who are members of the National Guard in other states.
The bill goes into effect on July 1, 2017.
