Income Withholding and Reporting – Electronic Filing of Quarterly Withholding Returns

On March 21, 2017, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed legislation (S.B. 249) regarding quarterly income tax withholding returns. Pursuant to the law, effective January 1, 2018, employers must file their quarterly Utah income tax withholding returns and producers must file their quarterly Utah mineral production tax withholding returns in an electronic format prescribed by the State Tax Commission.

Payment of Wages – Wage Claims

On March 17, 2017, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed legislation (H.B. 238) amending the state’s Payment of Wages Act. The bill:

  • Requires that an employee file certain wage claims with the Labor Commission; and
  • Provides a private cause of action against an employer for certain wage claims.

The bill goes into effect on May 9, 2017.

Workers’ Compensation Dependent Benefits

On March 17, 2017, Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed legislation (S.B. 120) amending the state’s workers’ compensation law. The bill modifies the calculation of death benefits to one or more dependents of a deceased employee.

The bill goes into effect on May 9, 2017.
